Vaiśampāyana said: Those two tigers among men stationed themselves on their chariots on both sides of the forest and a great slaughter of all beings began in every direction.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: वे दो मनुष्य बाघ जंगल के दोनों किनारों पर अपने रथों पर खड़े हो गए और हर दिशा में सभी प्राणियों का एक बड़ा नरसंहार शुरू हो गया।
Wherever they saw a creature that dwelt in Khāṇḍava trying to escape, those two heroes pursued it.
जहाँ भी उन्होंने खाण्डव में रहने वाले किसी प्राणी को भागने की कोशिश करते देखा, उन दोनों वीरों ने उसका पीछा किया।

No hole could be seen in the swift power of the chariots. Those two excellent chariots and the two charioteers seemed to be as one.
रथों की तीव्र शक्ति में कोई छिद्र नजर नहीं आ रहा था। वे दोनों उत्तम रथ और वे दोनों सारथि एक ही जान पड़ते थे।
As Khāṇḍava blazed, thousands of beings leapt in the ten directions, uttering frightened yells.
जैसे ही खाण्डव प्रज्वलित हुआ, हजारों प्राणी भयभीत होकर चिल्लाते हुए दसों दिशाओं में उड़ गए।
Some were burnt in one spot. Some were scorched. The eyes burst out for some. Some withered away. Some lost their minds and scattered.
कुछ एक ही स्थान पर जले हुए थे। कुछ झुलस गये. कइयों की तो आंखें फूट गईं. कुछ सूख गए. कुछ लोग अपना दिमाग खो बैठे और बिखर गए।
Some clung to their sons, others to their fathers and mothers. Out of affection, they were unable to let go and perished.
कुछ अपने बेटों से चिपके रहे, कुछ अपने पिता और माँ से। स्नेह के कारण, वे जाने नहीं दे सके और नष्ट हो गये।
Others rose up in their thousands, their forms distorted. But they were whirled around and again flung into the fire.
अन्य लोग हजारों की संख्या में उठ खड़े हुए, उनके रूप विकृत हो गए। परन्तु वे इधर-उधर घुमाये गये और फिर आग में फेंक दिये गये।
Some rolled on the ground, their wings, eyes and feet scorched. They were seen there, their bodies destroyed.
कुछ ज़मीन पर लुढ़क गये, उनके पंख, आँखें और पैर झुलस गये। उन्हें वहां देखा गया, उनके शरीर नष्ट हो गए।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All the waterbodies began to boil. In their thousands, the turtles and the fishes were seen dead.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सभी जलाशय उबलने लगे। हजारों की संख्या में कछुए और मछलियाँ मरी हुई दिखाई दीं।
In that destruction of beings in the forest, the burning bodies seemed like flaming torches.
जंगल में प्राणियों के उस संहार में जलते हुए शरीर जलती हुई मशालों के समान प्रतीत होते थे।
Those that ascended upwards were cut to pieces by Pārtha's arrows, as he laughingly flung them back into the flames.
जो ऊपर की ओर उठे वे पार्थ के बाणों से टुकड़े-टुकड़े हो गए, क्योंकि उसने हँसते हुए उन्हें वापस आग की लपटों में फेंक दिया।

Uttering loud wails, their bodies pierced everywhere by arrows, from above, they were swiftly flung back again into the fire.
ऊंचे स्वर से विलाप करते हुए, ऊपर से उनके शरीर को हर जगह बाणों से छेद दिया गया, वे तेजी से फिर से आग में फेंक दिए गए।

Pierced by arrows and in flames, the sounds made by the forest-dwellers was heard, like the ocean when it was churned.
बाणों से बिंधे हुए और आग की लपटों से तपते हुए वनवासियों की ऐसी ध्वनि सुनाई देती थी, जैसी समुद्र मंथन के समय सुनाई देती थी।
The huge flames of the delighted fire rose up into the sky and created great consternation among the dwellers of heaven.
हर्षित अग्नि की विशाल लपटें आकाश की ओर उठीं और स्वर्गवासियों में बड़ी व्याकुलता उत्पन्न कर दी।
The gods said: "O lord of the immortals! Why is the fire burning all these people? Is it the case that the end of the worlds has arrived?"
देवताओं ने कहा: "हे अमर देव! आग इन सभी लोगों को क्यों जला रही है? क्या ऐसा है कि दुनिया का अंत आ गया है?"
Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard this, the slayer of Vṛtra himself looked down. Harivāhana set out to save Khāṇḍava.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: यह सुनकर वृत्र के हत्यारे ने स्वयं नीचे देखा। हरिवाहन खाण्डव को बचाने के लिए निकले।
Covering the sky with a great mās-s of clouds in many forms, the lord of the gods and the wielder of the vajra began to pour down rain.
देवताओं के स्वामी और वज्रधारी ने आकाश को अनेक रूपों में बड़े-बड़े बादलों से ढककर वर्षा करना प्रारम्भ कर दिया।

ततोऽक्षमात्रा विसृजन्धाराः शतसहस्रशः अभ्यवर्षत्सहस्राक्षः पावकं खाण्डवं प्रति
The thousand-eyed one showered down rain on the fire raging in Khāṇḍava from hundreds and thousands of clouds, in shafts as thick as the axles.
सहस्र नेत्रों वाले ने सैकड़ों और हजारों बादलों से खाण्डव में भड़क रही अग्नि पर धुरी के समान मोटे बाणों से वर्षा की।
But the heat of the fire dried up these showers before they reached. Not a single one reached the fire.
लेकिन आग की तपिश ने इन फुहारों को पहुंचने से पहले ही सुखा दिया. एक भी आग तक नहीं पहुंचा.
Then the slayer of Namuci became very angry with the fire. He again started to rain down, in many torrents.
तब नामुसी का हत्यारा आग से बहुत क्रोधित हो गया। उसने फिर से कई मूसलाधार बारिश शुरू कर दी।
Then the flames fought with those showers, mingled with smoke and lightning. With the sound of the roar, that forest became terrible to look at.
फिर आग की लपटें धुएं और बिजली के साथ मिलकर उन बौछारों से लड़ीं। दहाड़ की आवाज से वह जंगल देखने में भयानक हो गया।
